Aloha from Maui! This past spring break, my family and I went to Hawaii, with a layover in California on both flights, going and coming back. Where to start! I would recommend having a layover in California if you are coming from Europe, the East Coast of the U.S, or anywhere else except the West Coast of the U.S or Asia.
After arriving in Maui first, we went to the beach. We stayed at the Royal Lahaina Resort which was on the shore, in Lahaina, Maui. The beach name was Kaanapali, and I highly recommend. It had crystal clear water with very little rocks and other materials in the ocean. That day, we also took a load off due to the long flight and just went to the pool and ate lunch inside the hotel. The next day, we decided to take the road trip called, “Road to Hana.” This was a very long drive to a small city named Hana, but all the sights on the way are what makes this amazing and beautiful. However, I would only recommend doing this drive if you have a driver that is experienced and is not tired as this drive is all twists and turns and very narrow. Through the way, we stopped first at the Falls. However, this is usually not seen as it needs to be raining a couple days before. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to see all 70 feet of it but it is a beautiful hike up the hill. The next stop was the Garden of Eden. This cost money, but it is totally worth it. It is $15 dollars per adult and $5 for children. This had many different falls, and even lots of different flowers and animal species. The next stop was lots of rock oceans, and finally a black sand beach which also had a blow hole to watch the waves. We didn’t go all the way to Hana, but I also recommend eating some of the famous banana nut bread on the way! The next morning, we woke up at 2:30am and left at 3:15 am to go to the Haleakala Crater, which we went to go to watch the sunrise on to of a dormant volcano. WARNING: Bring a big jacket because at 10,000 feet in the air at 5:00am in the morning, it tends to get under 30 degrees. It was also a 2 hour drive but make sure the driver is alert because it is open and not with barriers. After that, we watched the sunrise and drove back to the hotel. Time to talk about a very important thing: the food! The food is amazing, but be careful because under cooked fish or any meat can cause food poisoning, which struck my dad. Also, everything is SUPER EXPENSIVE IN HAWAII. However, there are many options as we ate Mexican, Japanese, Italian, and regular American food. However, all good things must come to an end as we had to fly to Oahu, which was amazing and you can read about it on the Oahu blog.
